Hey, what’s going on? Jeff here and welcome to the Men Unplugged podcast. I want to start this episode off by wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!!!
In this episode, we will be diving into a topic that many of us as Christians never really think about, but if we did, and we actually practiced this discipline it can impact your life and the lives of others in a very positive way. And that one thing is Scripture memory.
Before we dive into the heart of this show today, I want to ask you a few questions. Two of these you heard at the beginning of this episode, but I want to ask them again, because I think they’re worth talking about and thinking about in your own life. So here are they are again:
Have you ever experienced that frustrating moment when you couldn't recall a Bible verse?
Do you find yourself longing for a deeper connection and understanding of God’s Word but you’re struggling with the challenge of memorization?
Here’s the third question:
Would you like a quick and easy way to memorize Scripture?
Do you think that would help to strengthen your faith and deepen your walk with the Lord?
If these questions resonate with you, I hope that you know you're not alone. Many of us face these struggles, and today, we're going to explore not just the why, but also provide a very simple, yet practical solution to overcome these hurdles.
God encourages us to memorize Scripture: Just read these verses and I think you’ll see what I mean. Joshua 1:8 “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
Colossians 3:16 tells us to “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.”
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 tells us to bind God's law on our foreheads, teach it to our children, talk about it wherever we go, and make it an integral part of our lives.
In Psalm 119:11. The psalmist says… “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
The key verses there as it relates to this idea of Scripture memory is Joshua 1:8 and Deuteronomy 6:4-9. But to me, those other verses at the very least support the importance of Bible verse memory.
So if we know all this already as believers, then why don’t we memorize Scripture? How come we’re not making this a normal part of our everyday lives?
I think to understand the answers to those questions, I think it helps if we start by acknowledging the common pain points as it relates to Bible verse memory.
First - you may have felt overwhelmed by the thought of memorizing entire verses or chapters
Second - you may have thought where do I even start (which really at its core is the realization that no one has ever shown you how to do this or explained the importance of Scripture memory and how it can help you throughout your day)
Third - you may have tried memorizing some verses before, but for whatever reason the verses that you just memorized slipped away from your memory when you needed them the most
And lastly - time - you may have just said, I don’t have the time for this.. This is going to take way too long… sound familiar
So with that, here are some obvious questions to think about:
Why does this matter?
Why is it so important for you and me, as Christians, to commit Scripture to memory?
Well, there’s numerous reasons for that. Which I talk about more in depth in my Shortcut to Scripture Memory training at https://JeffJerina.com/ScriptureMemory
But in this episode, one of the main ones that I want to mention here has to deal with wisdom!!! More specifically, and most importantly God’s Wisdom.
When we have the wisdom of God stored in our hearts and our minds through the vehicle of Scripture memory, the power of His Word becomes a guiding force in our lives. It helps to lift our spirits when we’re down, push us through those trying times, helps us overcome temptation and avoid the heartaches and destruction of sin, and will also help us be a blessing to others - right away without having to search for a verse on the Internet, in a Bible app or worrying about having to carry our Bible around everywhere.
